Dalmö Coffee
Category:
Branding, Logo Design, and Product Design
Summary:
Dalmö is a Swedish fika style cafe offering coffee and baked goods. The name is a portmanteau of the traditional Swedish dala horse and the Swedish city of Malmö.
Project Goals:
Create the main logos for a Swedish fika inspired cafe. It should include a wordmark logo as well as a graphic logo. The wordmark should work as a standalone logo, and in conjunction with the graphic logo.
Create the packaging/labels for a seasonal line of coffee beans.
Process:
Logos: The main elements of the wordmark are the large extended swash, the tulip, and the umlaut, all working together for a balanced, unique logo. The horse logo is based off of the traditional Swedish dala horse. The backing cloth-like pattern and rough doily-like edges of the circle keep with the traditional aesthetic of the brand. The colors of the Swedish flag, yellow and blue, are prominently used.

Coffee Packaging/Labels: The packaging for a seasonal line of coffee beans uses the main Dalmö logo integrated with season-specific coffee blends. A unique flower icon in the style of traditional Swedish folk art was designed for each season. The seasons are referenced with a snowflake, a blossoming flower, a sun, and a leaf. Secondary graphics were added to the background of the labels for additional texture and visual appeal.
The “100% Arabica” stamp and “Whole Bean” icon that appear on the bags were also custom made with slightly distressed textures to keep with the “hand-made” feel of the product.
